Galatasaray centre-back Marcao was shockingly sent off for head-butting and punching his own teammate Kerem Akturkoglu during their first game of the season on Monday evening.

Marcao was seemingly shushed by Akturkoglu once Galatasaray scored their second goal of the game.

In reaction to this, Marcao walked aggressively towards his fellow teammate before attempting to head-butt and throw several punches before the rest of the Galatasaray squad were able to separate the pair.

Akturkoglu did not react aggressively back towards his teammate which meant that it was only the Brazilian centre-back who was sent off after the referee had the opportunity to consult with VAR officials.

Marcao is highly rated within the Galatasaray squad and is considered to be one of their most influential players however his future in Turkey is currently under threat after last night's antics.

Luckily for Marcao, the event did not impact the outcome of the game as Galatasaray still won the game 2-0 thanks to goals from Mbaye Diagne and Alexandru Cicaldau.

Many fans have taken to social media in the aftermath of the event as it was reminiscent of Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer's epic duel when playing for Newcastle in 2005.

Galatasaray manager Fatih Terim was asked about the event after the game and said: "I say it for all of us, for the football world. We have all kinds of arguments in the locker room, on the field.

"From time to time, we come to the point of attacking each other, but I was the first to say such a thing to a teammate on the field. I see it many times. I don't understand what's going on yet...

"Kerem is young and our precious. We do not allow anyone to do anything to anyone. Such actions can happen in football.

"These happen at practice in the locker room, but are quickly resolved. However, this was not pleasant. The solution is ours. We'll figure it out somehow."
