It could have been very serious.

When Sunderland defender Patrick Van Aanholt was pulled out of the club's Premier League tie against Tottenham this weekend, many questioned David Moyes' decision to haul the player off just 15 minutes before kick-off but it could have saved his life.

Van Aanholt was named in the starting line-up on Sunday but was replaced by Jason Denayer because of medical advice from heart specialists, who had previously seen results of a test the Dutchman had on Tuesday.

Sunderland boss David Moyes said the Dutchman has since had tests and would travel with the squad for Wednesday's match at Loftus Road (19:45 BST)

But Moyes was unhappy as to why the FA left it so late before telling Sunderland there was an issue:

"He had the statutory checks with the cardiologists. The Football Association panel advised us really late that he should not play until further tests had taken place.

"We are just surprised the FA panel didn't contact me or my doctor until 3.55 on Sunday afternoon.

"I have never in my career been put in a situation like that. It was completely outside our control. We knew we had to make the correct decision for the player and for the football club."
