Kylian Mbappe had the perfect response to Lyon joining him, and his PSG teammates, in the Champions League semi-final, after they dumped Manchester City out of the Champions League.

Lyon surprised everyone last week when they beat Juventus in the last 16 of the competition, to book a place in the mini tournament in Lisbon, and on Saturday night they did the same against City.

Rudi Garcia's side rode their luck at times but were the better team for much of the game and deserved their place in the last four in Europe, despite finishing seventh in Ligue 1.

It will come as a surprise to many that two teams from the most unliked of Europe's 'top five' leagues are in the semi final and Mbappe poked fun at those who refer to France's top tier as a 'Farmer's League.'

Mbappe, and Neymar, have probably been on the receiving end of most of the jibes about the quality of the league, with fans in Europe questioning whether their domestic success if anything to celebrate.

PSG are so much richer and better than all the teams in France so they are expected to win the league but have often failed in the Champions League.

The comeback win against Atalanta last week put to bed some of the criticism of them, when a loss would have heaped it on, and now they have the chance of reaching the final if they beat RB Leipzig on Tuesday.

Lyon's appearance in the final four, where they will take on Bayern Munich, is much more of a surprise than PSG's.

They didn't secure a place in Europe for next season, finishing seventh in the shortened Ligue 1 table, but they took a 1-0 lead into the 2nd leg against Juventus.

A couple of terrible penalty decisions, one for each team, led to a 2-1 win for the Old Lady on the night but Lyon went through on away goals.

No one expected the French side to repeat the trick against Pep Guardiola's uber rich City side, as the former Premier League champions aimed to win their first European title.

Maxwel Cornet scored his fourth goal against City to give his side the lead, Kevin de Bruyne equalised in the 69th minute but Moussa Dembele struck twice to put Garcia's side through.

The French are hoping to cultivate some European success.
