Phil Thompson Claims Manchester United Pay Alexis Sanchez £900k-A-Week

The former Liverpool player was trying to take a dig at Manchester United's spending but he seems to have got his figures very wrong.

Is it really the football season if one of Jeff's boys isn't saying something utterly ridiculous that makes us wonder if Soccer Saturday's reporters should really be doing the job? Well it must be the football season then.

Soccer Saturday is a staple of the armchair fans football weekend as we sit back, relax and watch the results roll in as the action is described by a bunch of former footballers that most of our audience would barely know played football.

Usually we don't have to wait long for one of them to say something ridiculous and that's because usually Paul Merson opens his mouth and some sort of nonsensical gold just pours out.

However this week it wasn't Merson but actually former Liverpool assistant manager and player Phil Thompson who said something stupid when taking a dig at Manchester United.

Sky showed an interview in which Mourinho took a dig at Liverpool's spending and in the most triggered way possible Thompson then claimed the Red Devils are paying £900k-a-week for Alexis Sanchez, just three times more than they're actually paying.

It's probably Jurgen Klopp that Mourinho is trying to get to, what with the German spending big not long after criticising United for doing the same, but something has clearly struck a nerve with Thompson as well.

Will United or Liverpool finish higher in the table this season?
