FIFA Announce Nominations For The Best Men's Player 2018 Award

Cristiano Ronaldo won the first two editions of the award and will be hoping to make it three in a row.

Who exactly is the best player in the world? Well FIFA have a very literal award to decide who it is and Cristiano Ronaldo is once again in the running, as the only man who's won it before.

For a while we decided who the best player in the world was by checking which of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo won the Ballon d'Or and then heading to Twitter to see who everyone thought should have won instead, usually the one that didn't win.

Then FIFA and the Ballon d'Or had a breakup and the world football governing body decided to create their own award, very literally titled 'The Best.'

For the past two years Ronaldo has been 'The Best Men's Player,' making him the only winner of the award, as Real Madrid have won the Champions League.

With Real winning three Champions League titles in a row you'd have thought that Ronaldo was a shoe in to follow suit but his and Portugal's failure at the World Cup, despite his four goals, puts that in question.

Now FIFA have released the nominees for the award and there's some very stiff competition:

The Premier League makes a good showing as Kevin de Bruyne, Eden Hazard, Harry Kane and Mohamed Salah all make an appearance on the list.

Spain has four and a bit players with Ronaldo having now moved to Italy, leaving Antoine Griezmann, Lionel Messi, Luka Modric and Raphael Varane as La Liga's representatives.

Kylian Mbappe is the only man being represented in France as Neymar goes from third in 2017 to out of the top 10 a year later.

At the World Cup Ronaldo scored four goals but they came in just two matches as Portugal were knocked out in the last 16.

Ronaldo's former teammate at Real, Modric, seems a really strong candidate after being a major player for Los Blancos' third Champions League in a row and leading Croatia to the World Cup final.
