Gary Neville Says One Moment Could Lose Antonio Conte His Job

Gary Neville Says One Moment Could Lose Antonio Conte His Job

The Chelsea manager had been under a bit of pressure before the win over Manchester United surely alleviated it.

Slaven Bilic became the latest football manager to be handed his P45 this morning. But who will be the next to join him? Gary Neville thinks there was one reason that Antonio Conte will get his marching orders at some point.

West Ham and Everton have both got rid of their managers in the last couple of weeks and are lining up David Moyes and Sam Allardyce to be their next managers, because new ideas are so overrated apparently.

Both those sides got rid of their managers whilst in the relegation zone and struggling. One manager who is in the top four in the league but has come under criticism this season is Antonio Conte.

The Italian won the Premier League last season but there has been mumblings that he isn't happy at Stamford Bridge ever since and the club's inconsistent start to the season had raised questions about his future.

Sunday's win over Manchester United lifted them into the top four and just a point behind second place United. However, speaking on Sky Sports, Gary Neville reckoned the decision to drop David Luiz could still could back and bite the manager on the behind:

"Every manager who has taken on the players here has gone pretty quickly.

"It is a big call because if you take on these players in that dressing room, where David Luiz is a big influence, a big character, you can lose at this club. This is not the end of this - this is the start.

"Conte has won today, but in two or three weeks' time if David Luiz is still sat on that bench, every time they concede a goal, the cameras will flip to David Luiz. It was the same with John Terry."

Luiz missed out on selection altogether and was sat in the stands. Image: PA

Previously player power at Stamford Bridge has seemingly helped get rid of AVB, Phil Scolari and Jose Mourinho with the players talking to Roman Abramovich or just stopping to perform as was the case under Mourinho.

It's a valid point from Neville but in the former Italy manager's favour is the fact that none of the players are close to the owner in the way that Terry, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Petr Cech were previously.

Conte's contract is up at the end of the season too and the thought is that he will head back to Italy then, could Luiz absence accelerate that?
