Premier League Star Set To Snub Manchester United Switch Out Of Fear Of Fan Backlash

The player is reluctant to move to Manchester United despite strong interest.

Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips is reportedly reluctant to join Manchester United out of fear of the backlash that could come his way.

The academy graduate has grown into one of the best in the Premier League in his position and saw his stock rise after a stellar first Premier League campaign and a series of excellent showings for England at Euro 2020.

He's been linked with a move away from Elland Road, with United reportedly ready to pay £60 million to bring him to Old Trafford.

But the Daily Star say local lad Phillips isn't too keen on making the move because of the intense rivalry between the two clubs.

It's said he has told close friends about his fears that he and has family would suffer vile abuse if he joined United.

The most high-profile example is Alan Smith, who was a rising star at Leeds and played a key role in their memorable run to Champions League semi-finals in 2001.

But when financial problems arose and Leeds were relegated in 2004, Smith controversially crossed the divide and was branded 'Judas' by the supporters who used to adore him.

Rio Ferdinand is also not particularly well thought off in West Yorkshire because of his £29 million switch to United many in 2002.

Liverpool are also believed to be interested in the 25-year-old. Danny Mills, who played 141 times for Leeds, reckons Phillips would go straight into United's team.

"I understand that because there will always be a bitter rivalry between the two," he told Football Insider in October.

"Would he fit in Manchester United's team? Would he play? Without a shadow of a doubt, yes. Would he improve them? Yes.

"Whether you like it or not as a Leeds fan, Manchester United are a global entity, you can't argue with that."
