Zlatan Ibrahimovic's future has been made unclear by the fact the big Swede suffered a horrific knee injury that is set to keep him on the sidelines for a lengthy period.

The 35-year old was playing for United in the Europa League quarter final second leg victory over Anderlecht last week and as the 90 minutes drew to a close, the former Barcelona striker looked to have brought the ball down on his chest and work an opening but as he landed, his leg looked to have hyper-extended and he was subsequently forced off.

It has since emerged that Ibrahimovic has suffered a cruciate knee injury that is set to rule him out for nine months, meaning he may not even play for Manchester United again.

Ibrahimovic, who has scored 27 goals this season, signed a one-year contract at United, with the option to extend.

According to Neil Custis from The Sun, Jose Mourinho wants to trigger that extension and hopes that Ibrahimovic, who is known for keeping himself in great shape physically and has steered clear of injury for the majority of his career, can come back from the set-back. £13 million-a-year is the wage that is being talked about.

However, the consensus is that Ibrahimovic does not want to sign the contract and be paid handsomely whilst recovering and not being available for selection.

United taking up the option to extend the contract is said to have got the go-ahead from those high up at United given Ibra's contributions this season, but the striker is said to have turned down the generous proposal.

But in the meantime, Ander Herrera has detailed how Ibrahimovic broke the news of his injury, and it consisted by gathering his teammates.

"It is true that he (Ibrahimovic) was down at the training ground yesterday and spoke to the group," Herrera said via The Metro.

Though the Spanish midfielder continued by saying that Ibrahimovic didn't much have much to say before wishing his teammates luck for the rest of the campaign.

"But he did not say much, really. He wished us only good luck with the rest of the season."

Herrera is more than confident that Ibrahimovic will be back.

"He has an incredible mentality and a great physique, I have never seen such a good football body. I am quite sure he will make it back."

Do you see Ibrahimovic coming back and pulling on the United shirt again?
