Zinedine Zidane has explained why Cristiano Ronaldo asked for a mobile phone after suffering a nasty facial injury against Deportivo la Coruna.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner scored twice in the 7-1 rout at the Bernabeu but was also in the wars after taking a boot to the eye when heading home his second and Los Blancos' sixth after being picked out by Casemiro.

Blood poured down the face of the Real No.7 as a result of the gash and as he received treatment for the physio, had a mobile phone in his hand to look at his face.

What Ronaldo could spend a months wages on:

With Ronaldo having the image of being a 'pretty boy, he was mocked on social media for his antics.

However, Zinedine Zidane has responded to those who have trolled his talisman and says the former Manchester United forward only reached for the phone to see if he was able to play on.

"Cristiano grabbed the mobile to see if he could continue playing or not," he said in a press conference on Tuesday, as quoted by The Mirror.

"He wanted to know, whether the cut was very deep or not. I am saying exactly what he told us in the dressing room after. I am not making anything up.

"They stitched it up and today he was back in training. If he is training with us, with his eye like it shows how important it is for him to be on the pitch."

Ronaldo was back in training yesterday, sporting a black eye and having a plaster on his face to cover the gash. He is in contention for tonight's Copa Del Rey quarter final second leg against Leganes

Real won the first leg 1-0 away from home and will be looking for a second convincing win in a matter of days.

What are your thoughts on Ronaldo's antics? Was he acting in vain or was what he did perfectly normal?
