Mikel Arteta has reportedly agreed to replace Arsene Wenger, and become the new Arsenal manager.

Goal's Arsenal correspondent Chris Wheatley is claiming a deal for Arteta to take charge of Arsenal is nearing a completion.

And Wenger has talked up the Spanish midfielder: "He was a leader, has good passion for the game, knows the club and knows what is important at the club," he told beIn Sports.

"Overall he has the qualities but I don't want to influence that publicly.

"I believe it is important they make their choice in an objective way and after made that decision I will support him."

Further reports in Spain suggest Arteta could lure Xabi Alonso back to England, and hire him as his assistant at Arsenal should he be appointed on a full-time basis.

Alonso is seeking for a opportunity in football management, while first earning his UEFA A and B licences as a No.2.

Alonso and Arteta go way back.

Childhood friends who both grew up together in San Sebastian before joining amateur Spanish outfit Antiguoko, who serve as a feeder club for Real Sociedad.
