Virgil van Dijk only uses his first name on the back of his Liverpool shirt because of a 'family feud'.

Van Dijk's maternal uncle has revealed why the Dutchman uses 'Virgil' on the back of his shirt.

Fans are accustomed to seeing the Liverpool superstar proudly donning just his first name and the player's uncle has explained the decision is the result of a dispute with his father.

It's claimed the Liverpool defender has never forgiven his dad Ron for walking out on his mum Hellen.

"Virgil has done amazingly well to be such a success given the ups and downs there have been in his family," Steven Fo Sieeuw told The Sun.

"The truth is his dad was not around for so many important years and it is his mother who is the real hero of this story.

"You don't take your dad's name off your shirt without a reason and Virgil has made it very clear how he feels."

The 28-year-old joined Liverpool during the winter transfer window in 2018 for £75 million.

He has since become one of the world's best defenders and he is set to be rewarded for his brilliant performances at the back.

Liverpool are set to offer him a new and improved five-year contract which will make the player the top earner at the club, with a reported £220,000-a-week deal.
