On Tuesday night, cameras caught West Brom midfielder Jake Livermore climbing into the crowd to confront a West Ham supporter.

Rumours emerged that a Hammers fan shouted something at him and it now it has been confirmed that a supporter aimed a disgusting taunt towards the Livermore, who had to be escorted down the tunnel by West Brom coach John Carver.

The incident happened when the 28-year-old was replaced by Hal Robson-Kanu in the second half.

In a statement released by West Brom, it confirms that a fan made a comment about the death of his infant son.

"In the light of intense media speculation, West Bromwich Albion would like to clarify an incident involving our player Jake Livermore in last night's Premier League game at West Ham." the statement reads on West Brom's website.

Following his substitution in the second half, Jake was subjected to general abuse from home supporters which he shrugged off. However, he acknowledges that he moved to confront one spectator who chose to make a comment about the death of his infant son.

The Club would like to think that all right-minded football supporters could understand this reaction which did not result in any physical exchanges before Jake was led away to our dressing room.

Jake is an outstanding young individual who has the total support of everyone at the Club and he has made it clear he considers this statement to be an end to an unhappy incident.

Albion were very appreciative of the swift response by the officials of West Ham in dealing with this matter and are more than happy to leave any further action they deem appropriate in their hands.

The Club has responded to an FA request to offer our observations of the incident and will not be making any further comment."

West Brom manager Alan Pardew admitted that he saw Livermore in the crowd, but did not know what prompted his actions.

"The only thing I know is I see Jake in the crowd, which disturbed me. Obviously you don't want to see a player in the crowd. There's no way he's going in the crowd - because I know him, he's a great lad - unless he was provoked severely. That's all I know.

"I haven't had a chance to talk to Jake. I'll speak to Jake and we'll go from there."

It really is disgusting behaviour from the fan who aimed the abuse at Livermore.
