Manchester United Players Reportedly Not Allowed To Swap Shirts

Another own goal!

It's not been a good day for Manchester United. First news about the club taking down a plaque commemorating legend Sir Matt Busby and now apparently one of the richest clubs in the world can't afford a few new shirts a season.

Of course swapping shirts isn't something that's done at the end of every club game and is usually saved for special cup occasions so a ban in the art form, as reported by The Sun, isn't the end of the world for players of the Old Trafford club but it does seem a bit ridiculous.

Apparently they've been asked to put a stop to the traditional sign of respect at the end of the game because it isn't cost effective, despite United being one of the richest clubs in the world and the cost of a shirt being pretty minimal for a player. A source told the paper, ""They are asked not to swap shirts so they don't have to be replaced. It seems daft given how much the club is worth."

The players were apparently issued with two long and two short sleeved shirts at the beginning of the season and that's their allocation for the campaign and yet that also sounds like it just can't be true. Couldn't they forgo a grand from their yearly wage and be allowed a few more shirts?

The move supposedly comes after the club took inspiration from Cambridge United after two sides played against each other in the 2015 FA Cup. Cambridge players weren't allowed to hand their shirts over because the club were in debt.

The source added, "The owners have a reputation for keeping an eye on costs," whilst handing over £260k-a-week to Zlatan Ibrahimovic...
