Jason Denayer Appears To Have Had To Tell Patrick Van Aanholt He's Not Playing

Very strange!

It's not everyday that you get told by your teammate that you've been dropped from the starting line up just minutes before a game is starting. However that's exactly what happened to Patrick Van Aanholt, unless it was a clever rouse for Jason Denayer.

Sunderland continued their annual dreadful start to the season with a 1-0 loss away to Spurs. That David Moyes' side only lost by one goal was mainly down to goalkeeper Jordan Pickford who was outstanding whilst the defence in front of him seemed hell bent on conceding more goals.

One man missing from that defence was Van Aanholt. The left back was down to start the game but with just 15 minutes till kick off things changed and pictures via the Daily Mail seem to show that the former Chelsea man was told by his replacement and he didn't look too happy about it:

Reportedly referee Mike Dean was handed a medical note for the 26 year old Dutch man to change the starting line up but clearly the player wasn't aware of it and he wasn't too unfit to boot the ball away in anger when his Belgian teammate informed him of the change.

David Moyes got angry when asked about the late change by Sky reporter Patrick Davison saying, "Medical reasons. I won't follow up if you don't mind. I'd like to be straight. We advised the referee very late on. I got word of something very late. People can get injured in the warm-up."

At no point did it look like that player had picked up an injury in the warm up!
