Wayne Rooney gave a brilliant, wide-ranging interview to BT Sport after Derby County's 3-0 FA Cup fifth round defeat against former club Manchester United last night.

United's all-time record goalscorer captained Derby at Pride Park and was being willed on to score by both sets of supporters inside the ground, with Sergio Romero superbly denying the ex England skipper from dead-ball situations in either half.

"Sergio was not in a kind mood," Rooney told BT Sport post-match.

"He could have let that one in. It would have been nice it wasn't to be."

The oldest player on the pitch, Rooney spoke to Robbie Savage, Jake Humphrey and his long-time colleague Rio Ferdinand and reserved plenty of praise for many of Derby's youngsters called upon by manager Phillip Cocu.

"We've got some great talent in the football club, not just the lads you've seen tonight but in the younger age groups as well.

"They're brilliant, they want to learn - first of all that's what you want to see in players - they listen, they take instructions and they want to play football. It's great to see and I think tonight they didn't disappoint.

"[Louie] Sibley had that bit of bite about him and worked hard, Jason Knight also worked very hard. For me, Max Baird, playing alongside him, he takes the ball and he wants the ball - everything didn't come off tonight but he keeps trying to do the right things."

"Today, although the result didn't go for us, it will be massive for the young players' careers."

Rooney, who shared a hug with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, had a quick chat with Brandon Williams and planted a slap on Andreas Pereira, also engaged in some banter with Ferdinand over his newly-groomed beard.

Rooney explained that his other half, Coleen, isn't a fan but believes "sometimes in life you make decisions and you have to stick by them".
