Loris Karius made his return to action for the first time since his Champions League final horror show yesterday, playing 45 minutes in a 7-0 friendly thrashing of Chester.

Liverpool fans gave the German a standing ovation and were encouraged by a save he made in the first half, but Karius experienced a very embarrassing moment in the warm-up that highlights the Reds' need for a top-quality 'keeper between the sticks.

The cameras were focus on former Red Neil Mellor giving his pre-match thoughts on LFCTV but in the background, Karius was being tested by some shots on his goal.

He was making fairly routine saves but then suddenly dropped one into his goal in scenes that were reminiscent of his display in Kiev around six weeks ago. Oops.

In case you've been caught up in all the World Cup madness and forgotten, the 25-year old gifted Karim Benzema the opener by rolling the ball out to him, before spilling Gareth Bale's long-range shot late on.

It later emerged that the former Mainz man had "26 out of 30 markers" for a concussion after undergoing tests, resulting from collision with Real skipper Sergio Ramos earlier in the game.

Manager Jurgen Klopp recently spoke about the concussion and said it was a direct explanation for his goalkeeper's gaffes on the big stage.

"We don't use it as an excuse, we use it as an explanation," Klopp told the official Liverpool website.

"For me, it is 100% the explanation [for his performance]. He was influenced by that knock - that is 100%."
