Vincenzo Montella may have been fired from his position as AC Milan manager this morning and unnecessarily tagged in a Twitter post informing everyone of that fact, but the former Roma striker has taken his dismissal with good grace.

Montella was let go after a mediocre start to the season which has seen Milan, despite heavy investment over the summer, struggle to make anything resembling an impression in the Serie A title race. The Rossoneri are currently sitting in seventh place with just six wins from their opening 14 league games.

A 0-0 draw with Torino over the weekend proved to be the final straw and Montella was relieved of his duties today, being replaced with Champions League and World Cup winner and all round Milanese legend, Gennaro Gattuso.

Gattuso is infamous for his time at the base of Milan's midfield, with Andrea Pirlo the good cop to the snarling bad of Gattuso, and has been managing Milan's youth team.

The decision is brutal on Montella who had a good season finishing sixth in his only full campaign in charge last term and even won the Supercoppa Italiana but his start to this campaign has obviously not been good enough, especially considering the money spent.

However, despite the sacking, The Little Aeroplane has taken to social media to pay his respects to Milan and the club's fans as well as wishing Gattuso well in his new job.

Translated from Italian, the tweet reads, "Coaching Milan was an honour, working with this group even more so.

"I thank the fans for their support, Fassone and Mirabelli for this opportunity and my staf for supporting me throughout.

"I hope Rino takes Milan back where they belong."

Given the volatile nature of managerial positions in Italy, we don't expect it to be long before a vacancy opens up at another Serie A club that Montella could fill.
