Liverpool's £75million fee for then Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk raised a few eyebrows in January last year.

But despite the world record price tag, it has proved to be a world-class acquisition for the Reds. Liverpool find themselves top of the Premier League after some stalwart performances from the towering Dutch defender.

Van Dijk is quickly becoming a fan favourite at Anfield, where he started his Liverpool career in perfect fashion with a late header in an FA Cup tie against Merseyside rivals Everton.

The former Southampton centre-half played a crucial role in Liverpool's impressive Champions League showing where they were beaten 3-1 in the final against Real Madrid. He's since gone on to establish himself as one of the first names on Klopp's team sheet.

At £75million, van Dijk is well on his way to doubling his stock. He lifted the lid on Klopp's personal management skills, which calmed any worries about the hefty transfer bill.

"I remember talking to the manager about the transfer fee Liverpool paid for me and he just said, 'listen, all good things cost a lot of money'," the Dutchman revealed in the Mirror.

"I thought it was a great thing to come out with - and it shows why Jurgen Klopp was one of the main reasons I came to this club.

"I remember meeting the boss for the first time. We had a really good talk and he just gave me the right confidence.

"There is something about Klopp that makes him stand out. It's not just his energy, I think it's his man- management.

"Klopp has shown in so many moments that he cares about us - and that's why he is able to demand so much from us all."

Liverpool have the best defensive record in the league so far this season, which proves Jurgen Klopp's insistence to bolster his defence is working perfectly towards the Reds' title campaign.

Can Liverpool go on and lift the Premier League trophy in May?
