Virgil van Dijk has told Harry Maguire to keep his focus strong after he became the most expensive defender in history.

Maguire's £80 million move from Leicester to Manchester United eclipses the £75 million Liverpool splashed out to land Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in a deal that has proved to be well worth the money.

A hefty price tag comes with increased spotlight and pressure on the England centre-back - something van Dijk has had to deal with - but the Dutchman has given his fellow defender some words of advice after his big-money transfer.

"The price comes with pressure but it doesn't change too much because you always have pressure at big clubs like Man United," Van Dijk told Sky Sports.

"It's not easy to completely shut off all the pressure. Quite a lot of things are more important than playing football. You need to enjoy it but the pressure will always be there.

"Just focus on doing what you love to do and play your best game. Get your qualities out on the pitch, enjoy your game and don't think about the other things.

"If opponents have a go during the game because you cost that much, what can you do? I'm not listening to them. It does not change anything in my head."

Harry Maguire's move to United will knock Cristiano Ronaldo's then-world record £80 million transfer to Real Madrid out of the top 10 record deals.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner's transfer to Real Madrid from United in 2009 was a record move for quite some time but is now barely near the top thanks to an incredibly inflated transfer market that has seen big money being thrown around.

Will 'Slabhead' justify his price tag?
