Virgil Van Dijk Gives His Verdict On Sergio Ramos’ Defensive Ability

Virgil Van Dijk Gives His Verdict On Sergio Ramos’ Defensive Ability

Virgil van Dijk is the latest player to speak out about Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos.

The 27-year-old Liverpool centre-back believes that the 32-year-old Spaniard is not one of the best defenders in the world.

"Ramos is not the best," Van Dijk told De Telegraaf.

"A great player and I respect what he has achieved, but he is not my type of central defender. Ramos' teammate at Real Madrid, Raphaël Varane, is my favorite. An excellent defender, young and much won.

"No, I myself am not of the way of defending Ramos, I try to avoid the situations in which he comes."

Ramos has found himself in an ongoing war of words with Liverpool star Dejan Lovren, with the 29-year-old Croatian centre-back initially criticising the Spain international and captain for making more mistakes than him.

"I've said it many times," Ramos said in response. "I don't know if these things are said out of frustration or for other reasons.

"I'm not going to answer Lovren or whoever wants to win three front pages or start the news bulletin.

"Everyone wins things for himself on the pitch."

Since then, Lovren turned their rivalry up a notch after Croatia's 3-2 win over Spain in the Nations League, mainly for how he took to Instagram to brag about elbowing Ramos in the match.

"Elbowed him good," he said.

"Ha ha! 3-2! Go ahead and talk now, buddy. Buddy! They are a bunch of pussies.

"Only this side is worthy [pointing to the Croatia flag on his shirt]. Now to beat England and walk out like a boss!"

Is Ramos overrated?
