Manchester City vs. Huddersfield wasn't a classic. But it did provide a brilliant moment following the full-time whistle.

Late on Saturday, Sir Alex Ferguson was taken ill, and rushed to hospital where he's undergone emergency surgery.

He remains in intensive care to optimise his recovery.

The football fraternity have, and continue to, pay their respect. Liverpool and Manchester City, as well as former United players, have issued classy tributes.

Not to mention fans from across the country including two City fans who held aloft a banner which read: "Football aside, get well Fergie".

Nice touch, lads.

Manchester United confirmed the unfortunate news by posting the following statement:

"Sir Alex Ferguson has undergone emergency surgery today for a brain haemorrhage. The procedure has gone very well but he needs a period of intensive care to optimise his recovery.

"His family request privacy in this matter. We will keep Sir Alex and his loved ones in our thoughts during this time, and we are united in our wish to see him make a comfortable, speedy recovery."

While arch rivals Liverpool shared a classy statement:

"The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool Football Club are with Sir Alex Ferguson and his family following the news that the former Manchester United manager is ill in hospital.

"A great rival but also a great friend who supported this club during its most difficult time, it is hoped that Sir Alex will make a full recovery.

"In the meantime, the club will offer its full support to Manchester United and also his family."

Keep fighting, Sir Alex!
