Xavi believes Riyad Mahrez is good enough to become a Barcelona player one day.

The Camp Nou legend is no longer at the club after calling time on his illustrious 24-year career there to join Al Sadd last summer.

But he knows exactly what it takes to be a Barcelona player at the highest level, becoming one of the world's best midfielders and helping the club to eight La Liga titles, three Copa del Reys and four Champions League trophies.

Barca have no problem in the attacking department at the moment with Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar leading the way in some style for the Spanish giants.

However, they'll have to replace the trio at some point in the future - and maybe Mahrez is the man?

The 25-year-old winger has been a revelation for Premier League leaders Leicester this season, scoring 17 goals and laying on 11 more for his team-mates while dazzling with his skills on the ball.

Xavi was asked by Middle East news and current affairs site Al Araby Al Jadeed if Mahrez is good enough for Barca and responded saying, via goal.com: "Yeah, why not? He could play for Barcelona in the future. He is talented, but that is not in my hands these days!

"He is a very good player. He suddenly came to my attention this season, I didn't know about him before, but this season he has blown up.

"He has made a name for himself among the top names in the English league and played exceptionally well. Thanks to what he has done for his club, he can now play for any big club in Europe."

Mahrez moving from Leicester to one of Europe's top clubs might turn out to be a reality unless Leicester can fight off interest in the summer.

Claudio Ranieri's men have been the story of the season in the Premier League and with a five-point gap over Tottenham at the top of the table, they look in great shape to achieve a shock league win.

Interest in Mahrez, Jamie Vardy and N'Golo Kante is inevitable, but maybe all three will be keen to stick around at the King Power Stadium to have a shot at Champions League football next season.
