Will they get their man?

That feeling in the pit of Ed Woodward's stomach wasn't because he'd eaten one too many prawn sandwiches but the feeling of impending Twitter abuse as Renato Sanches went to Bayern Munich. The United executive vice-chairman has a big summer on his hands.

United missed out on a man so high on their list of summer signings they watched him 24 times this season. However whilst the Old Trafford side were busy sorting out which scout to send to Portugal next the young Benfica midfielder, Sanches, was busy signing for Bayern. The whole thing is just the latest in a bunch of transfer embarrassment for Woodward.

Many have already blamed the man who is so good at the corporate side of his job that the club actually have a noodle sponsor amongst other ridiculous sponsorship deals for the mess up of Sanches, amongst other transfer dealings in the last three seasons, and his ego for not sacking Louis van Gaal by now.

According to the Mirror United and Woodward are now eyeing up a £25 million swoop for Real Madrid and France defender Raphael Varane. They supposedly thought about signing him in 2011 but went for Phil Jones instead. In their defence only Jones is a corner taking genius...

All the talk today, because Sanches is a Jorge Mendes player, was that the Premier League club missing out on the young Portuguese midfielder to Bayern meant that Jose Mourinho isn't going to Old Trafford and that the transfer deal was all part of some revenge plot from his agent.

That means that rumours connecting the club with Varane must equate to a guarantee that the 'Special One' is Old Trafford bound considering he's the one who started the French defender so often at the heart of Los Blancos defence when he was at the Bernabeu.

Of course the reality is that neither of these transfers, or possible transfers in the case of Varane, means anything to do with the manager in reality but you know it's nice to have a narrative.

Varane would be a perfect signing for United, whether Real would be so open to seeing him go is another story.
