Manchester United could have signed Dayot Upamecano for just £700,000 in 2015, but missed out on the defender because of a transfer row.

RB Leipzig snapped up Upamecano, 21, for £9 million in 2017.

He's since become one of the world's best defenders and is wanted by Europe's elite including The Red Devils.

And they could have had him on their books if they had agreed a fee with Upamecano's then club Valenciennes five years ago.

According to The Sun, Upamecano, who was 16 at the time, arrived at Old Trafford with his mum and agent expecting to complete a deal with the Premier League outfit.

However, United only stumped up £500,000 while the French club demanded £700,000.

It was considered too much to pay for the player.

Valenciennes eventually sold Upamecano to Leipzig who paid the extra £200,000 that United weren't prepared to pay.

A source said: "Dayot wanted to join United and the fee really was nothing.

"At first he got the red-carpet treatment but then they would not go that bit further with their offer and he was gone."

Upamecano is now regarded as one of the best defenders with a host of clubs keeping tabs on him.

Real Madrid and Liverpool are said to be interested in signing the France international.

He's valued at a whopping £55 million - a far cry from his £700,000 valuation in 2015.
