Is he worth the risk?

The recent transfer speculation involving Manchester United and Arsenal has revolved around a potential move to Old Trafford for Mesut Ozil, but the long time Premier League rivals could be set to go head-to-head over another transfer saga, in the new year.

German media outlet SportBILD are reporting that the two clubs are eyeing up a move for Borussia Dortmund winger Marco Reus, who is yet to sign a new contract with BVB ahead of his current deal expiring, next summer.

The Germany international has been out of action with a cruciate ligament injury since May and isn't expected to return until 2018, but his history of serious injury problems doesn't look to be putting off Arsene Wenger or Jose Mourinho.

Wenger will likely be looking for a replacement for Alexis Sanchez, who is widely expected to leave the Gunners next summer, when his contract expires, and the Arsenal manager has been a long term admirer of Reus, who could potentially be an ideal replacement for the outgoing Chilean, should he be able to avoid any further injuries.

Reus turns 30 next year and recently spoke to GQ Magazine about his future plans.

"There are four or five international clubs who interest me.

"On May 31 next year, I will turn 30. That would be my last big contract and a final opportunity to try something different.

"I have to be honest and fair and say I don't know where I'll end up. At the moment, I'm very happy in Dortmund and not thinking about what happens after 2019. But, of course, the time will come and then I will sit down and calmly make a decision."

Reus' words are unlikely to have gone down well with the Westfalenstadion, with Dortmund standing by him through a series of injury problems over the years. However, given that BVB have had to make do without Reus for long periods of time before, maybe the 29-year-old wouldn't be missed too much if he wasn't around on a permanent basis?

Reus has made 189 appearance for Dortmund since arriving from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2012, scoring 89 times and helping the club to the 2013 Champions League final, where they would lose 2-1 to Bayern Munich. The Germany international has been selected in the Bundesliga team of the season on five occasions and has won the league's Player Of The Season award twice, in 2011/12 and again in 2013/14.
