Bayern Munich manager Niko Kovac has provided a huge update on the Leroy Sane transfer saga.

Sane has been the subject of intense transfer speculation all summer with Bayern Munich vying for his services.

Manchester City rejected a £70 million bid for Sane earlier in the window, but recent reports suggest Bayern have finally opened talks with the Premier League champions over a £90 million transfer.

Ahead of the negotiations, Kovac is confident in striking a deal with City for their talented winger.

"Our leadership is very engaged in the situation there. I'm confident and assume that we will get him," he said about the transfer of Sane.

Pep Guardiola wants the 23-year-old to stay at City but insisted the decision rests with the player.

"We want him to stay and there is an offer waiting to talk with his agents to extend his contract," the City boss explained.

"He is a guy who I appreciate a lot. I like him a lot. I think he has an incredible gap to be better in terms of being connected in the game.

"I have said two or three times that we want him and we want him to stay.

"He has an offer, and we are waiting to talk with his agents to extend the contract, so it's not in our hands.

"He has to decide. If he wants and there is an agreement, then it's good. But if he wants to leave, he can do it. We will be sad - hopefully he stays."

Sane has two years left on his contract though it appears he's edging closer to a return to the Bundesliga.
