Mats Hummels braved the Borussia Dortmund-Bayern Munich divide for the second time in his career, this Summer when he returned to Bavaria after seven years at Signal Iduna Park. But the Germany international almost left Dortmund two years earlier, with the Premier League his destination.

Following Germany's World Cup success in 2014, Hummels was on then Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal's shopping list, with the Dutchman wanting to build his newly inherited defence around the German.

The move didn't end up coming to fruition but it wasn't for lack of trying on United's part and Hummels himself has now admitted to The Daily Mail that he was close to trading the Yellow Wall for the Stretford End:

"Yes, [a deal was close]. Yes, yes, yes. It was close. Very close.

"There were talks, several times in the last few years. They were the offers. I had England or one of the three big Spanish clubs. The Spanish interest was loose, loose offers. I don't like it that way. Nothing got close like the one from England.

"Van Gaal wanted me but he wasn't the only one. It is getting difficult for me now to play in England. I'm 28 next month and I've signed here for five years."

Given the problems United have had with their defence over the past few years, Hummels revelation will serve as further frustration for the club's fans who have had to panic through too many Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo performances for comfort over the past couple of years.
