Derby Set To Spend A Fortune On Record Signing

How much!?

Transfer fees in football may not mean a whole lot any more, given that even clubs of Crystal Palace's stature (with all due respect to Palace) can now afford to spend over £30m on a player. But when Derby County, a Championship club, are dropping £14m on a player with only a season of Championship experience, you've got to wonder when such excessive spending will begin to bite clubs on the arse.

The Rams are believed to have agreed a club record deal for Bristol City's Jonathan Kodjia, according to The Bristol Post. The Ivorian striker arrived at Ashton Gate last season and topped the club's scoring charts with 20 goals in his debut campaign for The Robins.

Despite being City's main striker, however, Kodjia was left out of Tuesday night's EFL Cup game with Scunthorpe and has also been omitted from today's matchday squad for the home game with Aston Villa, ahead of his move to Pride Park.

The Rams tested The Robins' resolve with a £10m bid earlier in the week, which was rejected, but now an improved £14m offer seems to have done enough to secure the 27-year-old, who will pocket Bristol City a tidy £12m profit, having set them back just £2.1m, last Summer.
