"After six wonderful years at Chelsea, it might be time to discover something different," he said after beating England to clinch third spot in Russia.
"Certainly after this World Cup. I can decide if I want to stay or go, but Chelsea will make the final decision - if they want to let me go. You know my preferred destination."
His come-and-get-me plea instantly sparked movement in the Real Madrid camp, who reportedly held talks to sign him for a transfer fee in the region of £100 million.
However, Real Madrid face stiff competition from fierce rivals Barcelona.
