One of the best free transfers ever could be on the cards for AC Milan.

Gennaro Gattuso, aided by technical director Leonardo, is eyeing up new talent ahead of the summer transfer window but the club are looking to strike a big deal in January.

AC Milan are looking for defensive reinforcements and one player the club have in mind is Diego Godin via Football Italia.

The Atletico Madrid defender is in the final year of his contract and will be a free agent at the end of the season.

However, the Italian outfit can negotiate a deal for him in January.

Godin, whose been at 'Atleti' since 2010, turns 33 next year and could prolong his playing days in Serie A.

He remains one of the best defenders in the world following his heroics in La Liga.

He's performed brilliantly and consistently in the heart of Atletico Madrid's defence since arriving in the Spanish capital from Villarreal.

The Uruguayan is a leader on and off the field.

Antoine Griezmann excellently highlighted his leadership ability.

The Frenchman was targeted by his own fans, last season. He was jeered in the final La Liga fixture of the 2017/18 campaign.

Godin, along with Diego Simeone, visited Griezmann's home and comforted him in a brilliant gesture.

"[Simeone] and Godin came to me after the match at the Wanda Metropolitano in which I was booed," he revealed.

"It was a message from Godin: 'I will go to your place so we can have a chat.' I didn't know that [Simeone] was with him, and I see [Simeone] stepping out of the car.

"I was amazed. 'What are you doing here? What do you want? Nothing' he said.

"We have been talking and we wanted to see how you have been. He told me that I didn't have to make a decision straight away but that I had to take things calmly.

"He advised me to talk it out with my relatives and close people and then [he told me] about all what I represented for the club and for himself."

Godin is a class act. Will he still be plying his trade with Atletico Madrid, next season? Watch this space.
