Kieran Trippier is being strongly tipped to become one of Newcastle United's first signings of the January transfer window, but the club are reportedly frustrated at having to pay a higher fee for the defender.

Spanish publication AS has quoted a report from The Telegraph that the signing of Trippier could be completed as soon as the first week of January, but Atletico are yet to receive an offer for the experienced full-back.

But the negotiations to bring Trippier to St James' Park could become messy, and Newcastle believe they will be quoted a higher price than other clubs due to their newly-found wealth since a Saudi-PIF led takeover in October.

A source from Newcastle reportedly said: "There is a price for Newcastle and a different one for all other clubs, but we know what to do."

Despite this, it is believed that the Magpies are the frontrunners in the race to sign the 31-year-old, who would be linking up with Eddie Howe again after the pair's time together at Burnley.

Trippier has made 17 appearances across all competitions for Atletico Madrid this season, and recently returned to action after recovering from a shoulder injury.

He won the first major trophy of his career with the club last season, winning the 2020/21 La Liga title.

But Diego Simeone's side have seen their form slump in recent weeks, and have lost their last four league matches.

Those results have effectively ended any realistic hopes of retaining their title, as Atletico now sit fifth and 17 points adrift of cross-city rivals Real Madrid - albeit with a game in hand.

They return to action after the Christmas break with a match away at Rayo Majadahonda in a Copa del Rey round of 32 tie.
