Tottenham striker Harry Kane has been branded the "best centre-forward in the world" ahead of Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski and Borussia Dortmund's Erling Haaland.

That's according to Paul Merson, who questioned the 27-year-old England captain's long-term future at Spurs.

Kane's current deal is set to expire in 2024, but his future at the club remains in doubt amid Tottenham's lack of silverware.

The England international has already been hailed by fans as the best player in football not to win a major trophy in his career.

Spurs suffered a 2-1 defeat to London rivals Arsenal at the Emirates last weekend.

And Arsenal hero Merson, 52, told Sky Sports that he wants to see Kane "finish his career winning stuff because he's a special player."

The Sky Sports pundit explained: "It was another football match where I couldn't see what Tottenham were trying to do and I was quite worried for them.

"But they'll probably turn up next week or the week after and roll someone over and everyone will say they are great and that Harry Kane should stay.

"Ultimately, it's a big decision for him -- I think he's the best centre-forward in the world and I just thought yesterday was another game he would have walked off the pitch and will have thought, 'This isn't good enough.'

"I want to see Harry Kane finish his career winning stuff because he's a special player.

"At the end of your career, you want to look back at the stuff you have won -- Tottenham's a great club and well run, but I'm not sure he'll be able to do there."

Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness has suggested that Kane should leave Tottenham in the summer if they fail to qualify for next season's Champions League.

Aston Villa star Jack Grealish, meanwhile, recently claimed that the Spurs star could play for "any team in the world or any national team."
