Legendary Argentine Diego Maradona has beaten fierce competition from Peter Schmeichel to be named the best footballer of the 1990s.

Maradona, 59, left Barcelona in 1984 to move to Napoli and spent six years at the Italian side as he won two Serie A titles and a UEFA Cup.

And fans over at Ranker have cast their votes and put the World Cup-winning Argentine at the top of the pile.

Maradona secured the popular vote -- at the time of this writing -- as he amassed 4,268 upvotes and only received 1,606 downvotes.

Schmeichel, 56, was widely revered as one of the best goalkeepers of the 1990s and played an instrumental part in Manchester United's treble-winning season.

The Danish legend finished behind Maradona in second place, while Roberto Baggio and Alessandro Del Piero came third and fourth respectively.

Posted below are the top 50 footballers of the 1990s, according to the fans.
