Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski has narrowly beaten Lionel Messi to be the top scorer in European football in 2019.

The 31-year-old Polish striker has been in scintillating form for club this season and has already scored 30 times across all competitions.

Transfermarkt has compiled data on Europe's biggest stars and how well they have performed in the calendar year.

Goals from each player's respective leagues, national cups and European competitions are taken into consideration for the overall rankings.

And players in the top 25 have also been separated if they are level on goals through their minutes-per-goal ratio.

Lewandowski came out top with an incredible 48 goals in 47 appearances for his side.

Barcelona superstar Messi, who won his record-breaking sixth Ballon d'Or this year, fell one short behind the Bayern Munich striker.

The 32-year-old Argentine forward scored an impressive 45 goals in 48 appearances.
