Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo holds a commanding lead over Barcelona captain Lionel Messi in the total number of points accumulated in Ballon d'Or history.

Ronaldo and Messi dominated the Ballon d'Or standing from 2008 to 2017 as they battled it out over France Football's coveted prize.

Messi, 33, broke his Ballon d'Or deadlock with fierce rival Ronaldo in 2019 by capturing an unprecedented sixth award.

But YouTuber StatsTube has now calculated the accumulated amount of points each player has received between 1956 up until 2019.

According to StatsTube, Ronaldo has amassed an incredible 3,601 points from his nominations for the Ballon d'Or.

Messi finished behind the former Manchester United and Real Madrid superstar with 2,961 points.

Los Blancos star Luka Modric, who captured the award in 2018, finished a distant third with 837 points.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is the only player in the top 10 to have not won the Ballon d'Or.

The 29-year-old Netherlands captain narrowly missed out on France Football's award to Messi last year.

France Football has already confirmed that the 2020 edition of the award would be cancelled due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Ballon d'Or organiser's statement said in July: "We did not want to put an indelible asterisk on the prize list as 'a trophy won in exceptional circumstances due to the health crisis of Covid-19.'

"Protecting the credibility and legitimacy of such a prize also means guaranteeing its irreproachability over time."
