Timo Werner Missed From Four Yards Out Against Real Madrid

Timo Werner continued his knack of missing glorious chances when he was denied by Thibaut Courtois just four yards out in tonight's Champions League semi-final first leg.

The ball was laid on a plate by Christian Pulisic and it looked like the net was about to ripple for a crucial away goal.

But Werner, who went 15 games for club and country without scoring before notching against West Ham at the weekend, made a right mess of it.

The former RB Leipzig striker hit the ball straight at Courtois, who saved well with his feet against his former employers.

Misses from close range have been a regular occurence in Werner's debut season at Chelsea since he joined in a £47 million deal.

His spurned opportunity led to him trending and receiving a whole lot of grief Twitter.

Fortunately for Werner and Chelsea, they weren't made to rue the chance as just minutes later, Pulisic opened the scoring in fine fashion.

After latching onto a long ball over the top from Antonio Rudiger, the United States winger maintained his composure to round Courtois and slot home with the help of a touch from Raphael Varane on the line.

Pulisic made history by becoming the first American to find the net in a Champions League semi-final.

Karim Benzema levelled for Los Blancos with a sensational swivelling volley in the 29th minute, taking his tally for the season to 28 while notching his 71st in the Champions League.
