The top 50 teams in world football right now have been released and it shows the dramatic fall of Manchester United, who find themselves right down in 46th.
The football world rankings publish the list on a weekly basis and operate in the same way as the ATP World Tennis Rankings in terms of results beyond the last 52 weeks not being relevant.
There is a further explanation on how world ranking points are gathered, with the result, importance of match, competition strength and FIFA confederation strength all coming into play.
- Not every match is equally important
- Not every domestic competition of international cup tournament is equally strong
- Not every domestic competition has the same number of matches
- Not every FIFA Confederation is equally strong"
The latest batch of rankings sees United just four places away from the very bottom, with Barcelona leading the way despite a pretty poor start to the season and an fairly disappointing campaign last time out.
European champions Liverpool are second, South American champions RIver Plate are in third, with domestic treble winners Manchester City in fourth.
Valencia, who won the Copa Del Rey last season, find themselves in fifth, with Real Madrid, Boca Juniors, Athletico Paranaense, Palmeiras and Chelsea completing the top ten.
