Harry Kane is the most popular football player in the United Kingdom, beating the likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale to the top spot.

YouGov spoke with over 7,000 people as part of a study, listing the names of a total of 89 footballers and asking the public whether they thought positively, negatively or neutrally about them.

And England skipper Kane, who was awarded an MBE after finishing as the top scorer at the 2018 World Cup, came on top - with 50% of people having a positive opinion of the Spurs striker.

Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi is second on 42%, with Real Madrid and Wales winger Bale occupying third on 39%. Jermain Defoe, who received widespread praise for what he did for the late Bradley Lowery, is the fourth-most popular on the list.

Ronaldo, who had several glorious years in England with Manchester United, is in sixth place with 34%.

The assortment of names on the whole is well-varied and includes a number of retired players such as Didier Drogba (10th), Petr Cech (15th), Fernando Torres (17th) Robin van Persie (19th), John Terry (24th), Joe Cole (29th), Dwight Yorke (36) and Ashley Cole (46th).

Former Arsenal Women star-turned-TV pundit Alex Scott is the highest-ranked female at 36, with Manchester City's Ellen White completing the list at 50 following on from her heroics in the Women's World Cup in the summer.
