The Reason Behind Wayne Shaw's First Sacking At Sutton United In 2013

The Reason Behind Wayne Shaw's First Sacking At Sutton United In 2013

Even more bizarre than his second?

Internet celebrity goalkeeper Wayne Shaw has been asked to resign from Sutton United following the stunt which saw him eat a pie/pasty with just under 10 minutes remaining of his side's FA Cup clash with Arsenal.

At first it looked like a hilarious 'magic of the cup' moment but on further 'investigation' it was shown to be a cynical piece of advertising.

From hoovering the dug-outs, nipping out to the bar at half-time to the controversial pie gate. And he's now been asked to resign by Sutton United, and has since agreed to it as confirmed by Kay Burley of Sky Sports:

Manager Paul Doswell appeared on Sky News to address the situation and Shaw's subsequent departure.

Sun Bets had sponsored Sutton for the one off game and it came to light that the company had offered odds of 8/1 that Shaw would eat a pie on the bench during the game.

Both The FA and the Gambling Commission have opened investigations into the goalkeeper for the incident and as a result of the pie-gate, he has subsequently been asked to resign by Sutton, which he has agreed to do.

Prior to his forced resignation, Shaw appeared as a guest on Good Morning Britain earlier today and spoke about his pie-eating antics.

But this isn't the first time the 46-year old was sacked by the club and the first instance is perhaps even bizarre than the current predicament, which is saying something.

Back in 2013, Shaw was getting some abuse from a Kingstonian fan prior to a game and he was so infuriated that he went over, jumped over the advertising boards and headbutted the fan.

Unlike his former teammate Jamie Collins, who attempted a tactical flying headbutt to thwart Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain last night, Shaw actually went through with it.

He put the incident down to a "bad day at work" and had a year away from Sutton before returning.

He's since emerged as a hero and took on several different positions with the club, including acting as the goalkeeping coach, reserve goalkeeper and caretaker - which meant he slept on the sofa at the stadium three times a week.

Where next for Wayne Shaw? He's already got himself an offer from Morrisons, who want to recruit him as a 'Pie Taster' but after becoming such a viral sensation, he will surely be flooded with opportunities following on from his departure.
