Lionel Messi will look to add five new records to his esteemed collection in 2020.

The Argentine's gorgeous goal in the 4-1 win over Alaves just over a week ago means he has finished 2019 with a staggering 50 goals for club and country - a feat he's managed in nine of the last ten years.

He will be desperate to continue in the same vein next year and as per the Daily Express, there are a number of records Messi could realistically reach if all goes well for him at the start of the 2020s.

For starters, Messi will be hoping to move two clear ahead of rival Cristiano Ronaldo when it comes to Ballon d'Ors. The 32-year old scooped his sixth gong to move one ahead of Ronaldo and having shown no sign of slowing down whatsoever, a history-making seventh could well be on the cards.

The Barcelona skipper is also closing in on Pele's goalscoring record. The legendary Brazilian notched a staggering 643 for Santos and holds the record for the most goals for a single club.

But Messi needs just 26 to surpass Pele and is well on course to do so in 2020 bar an absolutely disastrous injury.

He could also move ahead of his former Barcelona colleague Xavi as the all-time record appearance maker for the Blaugrana if he turns out on 62 occasions next year.

Rosario's favourite son will also pull level with Ryan Giggs if he scores in the Champions League for a 16th consecutive season, though Cristiano Ronaldo is also on course to do so.

And finally, Messi will be targeting a seventh Golden Boot in his illustrious career - and is seriously good value to achieve that with how prolific he is in front of goal.
