The Substitution Rule Is Set To Change Dramatically When The Premier League Returns

The idea behind it would be to ease the physical burden on players...

Premier League clubs could have the ability to make five substitutions when the Premier League eventually returns.

The English domestic season had been postponed until April due to the coronavirus outbreak but the Premier League are reportedly planning to have remaining games played behind closed doors in a month during the summer.

If that does indeed happen, clubs are expected to lobby for an extra two substitutions in games due to fears of fatigue and injuries following an extended, unscheduled rest period due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Clubs are currently allowed to make three subs from the seven players they name on the bench and according to The Mirror, managers are keen on the idea and could well be supported by the League Managers' Association.

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has already voiced his fears for restarting the season too soon and cramming fixtures into a short space of time.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, the Belgian said: "Normally you'd need a preparation of three to four weeks. If we restart immediately then everybody will be injured after a few games.

"I know that there's lots of money involved. But I think that waiting so long to make a decision can cause issues next season. There won't be a long summer break and you can just postpone everything.

"I would feel sad if the season is stopped after such a good year, but if it avoids issues for next season, it must be done."

It's also said that the use of VAR could well put on hold temporarily as a precautionary measure because of COVID-19.

Social distancing isn't exactly being carried out at Stockley Park if there are three people inside a small room, which is of course a big problem.

The Premier League are poised to discuss both topics during their next meeting, set to take place on Friday.
