With Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Ragnar Klavan all missing the visit of Manchester City on Wednesday night through injury, 19-year old centre-back Conor Masterson was afforded the wonderful opportunity of being brought into the squad for the thrilling 3-0 Champions League quarter final first leg.

Masterson, who has captained the Under 18's side in the past, has been with the club since the age of 12.

He's spent this season playing for the Under 23's, as well as playing under Steven Gerrard in the Under 19's UEFA Youth League campaign.

But after training with the club following a defensive crisis, he was called upon last night by Jurgen Klopp.

And as per the German, he had an uber confident reaction.

"Conor is a good boy, he plays in our Under-23s and was captain of the Under-18s, and is very confident," Klopp revealed in a chat with RTÉ Sport.

"I'm not sure if that's typical for Ireland but when I said to him that he will be in the squad, he said, I'm ready man'."

Exactly the response Klopp will have been hoping for. It's great to see a youngster seemingly unfazed about the whole occasion.

Masterson's services in the game weren't required but the whole experience was one which he duly enjoyed.

"It was an unbelievable experience just going out to warm up, you could just see the fans and the atmosphere. It was just surreal really," he is quoted as saying.

"The team were unbelievable, the performance, 3-0 against the best team in the country was just unbelievable."

The young lad has gained a few move more admirers without even stepping onto the pitch...
