Arsenal legend Ian Wright argued that Sunday afternoon's defeat was 'the worst' Arsenal defeat he's ever seen.

Arsene Wenger's side suffered an embarrassing defeat to Liverpool after goals from Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Daniel Sturridge left the likes of Alexis Sanchez in utter disbelief.

Sanchez was blasted on a number of occasions, but one player who was singled out by many, including pundit and commentator Gary Neville, was Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil.

Neville, who pointed out: "look at his recovery run... I'm absolutely fuming watching him." when describing the efforts of Ozil - was just one of the many critics of his below par performance.

This wasn't the only classic line the former Manchester United defender produced on a disappointing afternoon for Arsenal:

Hours after Ozil walked off the pitch with his head in his hands, the German international took to Instagram to release a statement:

"Blame us, shout at us, criticize us, but I'm also very disappointed about today's game,"

"We wanted to achieve a positive result before the international break but we were simply not good enough during the 90 minutes and Liverpool deserved the win without a doubt.

"Usually I'm too angry to post on social media after such frustrating days like today, but I don't want to let this match go uncommented before traveling to the DFB (Germany) Team.

"Nevertheless... Gunners, I'm sorry - especially for the fans who travelled all the way up to Liverpool to see us fighting. But we will try everything to improve in the next game and bounce back from the disappointment we are all feeling at the moment."

Arsenal fans lost their shit before a ball had even been kicked after Arsene Wenger dropped club record signing Alexandre Lacazette in favour of Danny Welbeck.

And they continued to vent their anger towards the French manager, as well as Mesut Ozil who was a passenger in the middle of the park.

Needless to say, Ozil was the brunt of all the jokes:

Thoughts on Ozil's apology? It's certainly received a mixed reaction on social media.
