Nike's 'Winner Stays On' Advert Will Always Be A Classic
Nike have produced an array of superb football adverts over the years, from the 'Secret Tournament' to the memorable Brazil World Cup commercial where the Samba stars were playing football in the airport.
But one of their best in recent memory came as part of their 'Risk Everything' in the build up to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
It was titled 'Winner Stays On' and featured a selection of Nike's top players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Wayne Rooney, Zlatan Ibrahimović, Eden Hazard, David Luiz, Thibaut Courtois, Gonzalo Higuaín, Gerard Piqué, Andrés Iniesta, Mario Götze, Thiago Silva, Andrea Pirlo and Tim Howard.
Irina Shayk, Kobe Bryant, Jon Jones, Anderson Silva and the Incredible Hulk (why not?) also have cameo roles in the short film.
The idea was a simple but relatable one. As football fans, we're already tried imitate our idols at the local park or playing fields and so Nike brought that to life here, with a group of lads playing 'Winner Stays On' and transforming into the world's best.
"Guess I'm Cristiano Ronaldo then," says one of the captains to the other, who then informs him that he's going to be Neymar for the game.
And in next no time Rooney, Ibrahimovic, Hazard, David Luiz, Thiago Silva and many more are all strutting their stuff on the hallowed turf.
But while there is focus on the skills of the players, comedy is a recurring theme throughout.
You have Ronaldo's exchange with a youngster where he taunts him for not having a supermodel girlfriend cheering him on, one lad getting trolled off his teammate for passing backwards as Neymar, while another accidentally turning into security guard 'Iniesto' instead of Iniesta for a brief moment.
Then there's the real Andrea Pirlo watching his Sunday League equivalent getting a sore one to the crown jewels and Zlatan telling Gotze he thinks "Zlatan should take" the free-kick.
With the scores standing at 2-2, David Luiz (one of two versions of the Chelsea defender in the advert) brings down the youngster yet to transform and he then seizes his moment by taking the ball of Ronaldo before dinking the penalty past Howard in goal.
At the time, The Telegraph said the Nike video garnered over 100 million views and it is easily one of the most successful the American sportswear giant have put together.
