Not all heroes wear capes...

Remembering exactly where he came from, Mario Mandzukic reportedly paid for the beers for fans watching the tense World Cup quarter final between Croatia and Russia in his hometown.

The Juventus striker is from Slavonski Brod, which reportedly has 63,000 people living in the city. Many locals gathered at the Brod Fortress, the main square, to tune in to see their heroes replicate the 1998 heroics and reach the semi final of the World Cup.

After a dramatic 2-2 draw in 120 minutes of action, Croatia won a second straight penalty shoot-out - with Ivan Rakitic scoring the decisive spot-kick yet again.

And Mandzukic, who set up former Leicester striker Andrej Kramaric for the equalise in normal time, made sure it was an extra enjoyable experience for his hometown people by laying out just short of £3,000 on beer for them to guzzle.

Radio Slavonija said the following: "Mario Mandzukic did not forget about his hometown of Slavonski Brod.

"And he paid 25,000 kuna (around £3,000) so that he could buy fans drinks who turned up to watch the quarter final clash at the Brod Fortress."

It's a brilliant gesture from Mandzukic, who has a knack for being very generous. Last year, he made a 20,000 euros donation to firefighters in Dalmatia so that they received new equipment to help them tackle wildfires that spread in and around Split.

Don't be surprised if you hear about him paying for another bar tab for locals watching the huge clash with England on Wednesday...
