Lionel Messi made an instant impact on his return to the Barcelona XI by scoring a sensational goal from outside of the box with his weak right foot.

The 33-year-old Barcelona captain showed early signs of being at his best as he produced an inch-perfect pass to Francisco Trincao in the build-up for his side's first goal against Girona.

And Messi would end the first half on a high note as he added Barcelona's second goal in stunning fashion at the Johan Cruyff Stadium.

The Argentine forward received the ball outside of the box, quickly turned and then fired his shot past Neto with a superb finish on his weak foot.

Fans wasted no time in taking to Twitter to praise Messi, who made a shock U-turn on his Barcelona transfer request earlier this month.

Samuel Saiz pulled one back for Girona shortly after half-time, but Messi would complete his brace only minutes later.

Barcelona, who will face Villarreal in their opening La Liga match of the season later this month, lead 3-1 in the second half against Girona.
