Barcelona captain Lionel Messi delivered an exhilarating performance against Getafe as a compilation highlighted why he is the 'most in-form player in 2021.'

The 33-year-old Argentine superstar came close to scoring in the opening five minutes at the Camp Nou with a thunderous shot from the edge of the area.

Unfortunately, Messi's effort smashed off the bar and bounced on the line as he was denied an incredible opener.

But the Barcelona forward would open the scoring minutes later as Sergio Busquets picked out Messi with an inch-perfect pass.

Getafe pulled back an equaliser after Clement Lenglet put the ball in the back of his own net, but Barcelona would restore their lead well before half-time.

Sofian Chakla had a complete nightmare as he managed to poke the ball past David Soria after the Getafe shot-stopper charged off his line.

Messi put Barcelona 3-1 up minutes later as he beat Soria from an extremely tight angle at his near post after his initial shot was tipped onto the inside of the post.

The six-time Ballon d'Or winner's brace took his goalscoring tally to 23 in 2021, along with registering eight assists.

Messi could have had his hat-trick against Getafe, but he instead allowed Antoine Griezmann to step up for Barcelona's injury-time penalty.

Along with the compilation to highlight his stunning performance, fans flocked to social media to praise Messi as the best player in the world 'by a distance.'

Enes Unal scored from the spot-kick for Getafe in the second half, but Ronald Araujo and Griezmann both added their names to the scoresheet to seal Barcelona's 5-2 win at the Camp Nou.

Barcelona's victory over Getafe moves them to third place in La Liga ahead of Sevilla.

The Spanish side are five points behind league leaders Atletico Madrid and two points behind fierce rivals Real Madrid.

Ronald Koeman's men will return to La Liga action on Sunday as they travel to El Madrigal for their clash with Villarreal.
