Lionel Messi seems to break a new record every time he steps onto a football pitch, but he was it again this weekend.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner struck twice in the 6-1 demolition over Catalan neighbours Girona at the Nou Camp on Saturday, completely running the game.

His masterful display also featured him laying on an assist for Luis Suarez and as a result, Messi is now the all-time assister in La Liga history - with the Argentine ace setting up a teammate on a staggering 148 occasions.

He has been the league's all-time top scorer for a few years now, and recently became the all-time top scorer in Europe's top five leagues when he surpassed Gerd Muller's tally.

But not resting on his laurels, Messi continues to leave jaws dropping and set new records.

In addition to that, in finding the net against La Liga, he has now scored against 36 different opponents in the Spanish top flight, which is a La Liga record

Six days ago, we told you how Messi had only failed to score against 12 teams he had come up against in his career. But after he struck in consecutive games against Chelsea and Girona, the number has been whittled down to ten.

Messi hasn't scored against Barca's Catalan neighbours Gramenet, as well as Spanish sides Real Murcia, Xerez and Cadiz.

Furthermore, he has drawn blanks against Liverpool, Benfica, Rubin Kazan and Inter Milan in the Champions League, while Messi grabbed an assist, as opposed to a goal, when he played in the 4-0 Club World Cup final win over Saudi outfit Al-Sadd in 2011.

He also failed to score against Italian side Udinese back in 2005.

Not done too bad for himself has he?
