Mbappe would return minutes later to score the defending French champions' fourth of the match, but he did so in style with his frightening pace on show.
Lyon were dispossessed in the PSG half as Marco Verratti collected the loose ball and looked up to see Mbappe making the run from inside his half.
The 28-year-old Italian midfielder lobbed a superb pass straight into the path of Mbappe as he went charging through for a one-on-one with Lopes.
The PSG superstar kept his cool and fired a powerful side-footed strike past a helpless Lopes from outside of the box.
Mbappe's brace has now taken his goalscoring tally to 100 in Ligue 1.
Islam Slimani and Maxwel Cornet both scored for Lyon, but PSG walked away with all three points on the night.
PSG's 4-2 victory puts them top of the table ahead of Lille, who also have 63 points in the league this season.
Lyon, meanwhile, are third in Ligue 1 and are three points behind both Lille and PSG.
PSG will continue their Ligue 1 campaign after the international break as they will host Lille at the Parc des Princes.
