France Have 19 Talented Centre-Backs Under The Age Of 25 To Choose From Ahead Of World Cup

The depth here is actually ridiculous.

With just 91 days until the start of the FIFA World Cup, Didier Deschamps named his 24-man squad for a pair of friendly matches against Colombia and Russia this month and it suddenly hit me that France will be a huge contender this summer.

In one of the most stacked squads I've ever come across, the likes of Paul Pogba, N'Golo Kane and Thomas Lemar feature in the midfield while Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele and Anthony Martial will try and bag the goals up top.

It's easy to talk about the attacking threat, but what about the defenders and in particular, the centre-back slots?

Deschamps decided to pick Real Madrid defender Rafael Varane, Barcelona's very own Samuel Umtiti and Arsenal stalwart Laurent Koscielny in arguably the strongest defensive line-up of all the teams in Russia this summer.

It's certainly an impressive bunch. The thing is, It must have been incredibly difficult for Deschamps because he had so many options to choose from when selecting his defensive line-up.

The fact that France have 19 talented centre-backs to choose from ahead of their tournament opener against Australia on the 16 June is absolutely ridiculous.

Now this is the true definition of strength in depth.

From the pace and power of Rafael Varane to the composed figure of Aymeric Laporte, who wasn't even selected in the squad to face Colombia and Russia. This France team really is a joy to behold.

Last year, we suggested why you should put £10 on France lifting the World Cup. To showcase their incredible strength in depth, we put together a few teams that could feature under Deschamps this summer.

But we didn't realise how many options they have when it comes to the centre-back slot alone.

Madness!
